La Fonda Armchair on the traverse

Charles & Ray Eames, 1961

Alexander Girard designed the restaurant La Fonda del Sol, which opened in 1961, down to the very last detail, from the furniture and crockery to the pat tern on the tablecloths. La Fonda del Sol strengthened his reputation as one of the defining designers of his time. For the restaurant ’s furnishings he wanted chairs with backrest that would not project above the tables and with a leg design which complemented the rest of the interior fittings. His friends Charles & Ray Eames designed both the shells and a base that met these requirements, while Girard provided the design of the covers. Vitra has been producing this particular chair again since 2007, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Eames.
